Money

There’s an elegant simplicity to not worrying about individual character wealth… but from Batman to Angel to Ironman… it’s kinda a gimmick of the genre and in any modern/reality derived setting… money is a SIGNIFICANT power.

This system is fully basic ICONS compliant, it introduces no new rules or concepts, it simply puts a new spin on what’s already there.

Social ‘Class,’ Aspects & Specialties

Social Class Notes
Poor The character has a “Poverty” based Aspect (Complication).
Lower Middle Class This is the assumed default level. No Aspects or Specialties required.
Solid Middle Class The character has a single “Wealth” based Aspect (Quality) OR a reasonably applicable Specialty (+1)
Upper Middle Class The character has a single “Wealth” based Aspect (Quality) AND a reasonably applicable Specialty (+1)
OR
has no relevant Aspect AND an applicable Expert Specialty (+2)
Low Upper Class The character has a single “Wealth” based Aspect (Quality) AND a reasonably applicable Expert Specialty (+2)
OR
has no relevant Aspect AND an applicable Mastery Specialty (+3)
Solid Upper Class The character with a single “Wealth” based Aspect (Quality) AND a reasonably applicable Mastery Specialty (+3)

  • Bruce inherited his money. This allows him to be the crime-fighter that he is.
    1. He has the Complication: Social (People Expect Certain Things From Those With My Family Name).
    2. He also has the Quality: Identity (Billionaire Playboy).
    3. Though he rarely worries about the day-to-day operations of his various sources of wealth… he can step into the fray when he needs to. He’s has Mastery (+3) in Business.
  • This allows the character to be considered Filthy Rich.

Example

  • Tony inherited and also made his money. This funds his super powered gadgets.
    1. He has the Complication: Social (Boorish Nouveau Riche Jerk)
    2. He also has the Quality: Identity (Billionaire Playboy)
    3. His corporations make money by building a better technology based future. He’s got tons of patents with his Mastery (+3) in Mechanics.
  • This allows the character to be considered Filthy Rich.

Example

  • Peter lives in New York and tries to get by as a Newspaper Photographer using his Specialty (+1) in Art (Photography).
  • He doesn’t have any other applicable Aspects.
  • This allows him to be Solidly Middle Class. However since he lives in New York City it tends to feel like Lower Middle Class or even Poor sometimes!
